When Classroom Meets Synthetic Biology! High School Students Unravel New Technologies in Biological Blue Dyeing

Created on 03.06
On November 27, 2025, students from the G2 grade of the AL High School at Guangdong Country Garden School, participating in the "Wise are Not Perplexed" EPQ academic inquiry project, visited Daosheng Biotechnology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. They delved into the mysteries of synthetic biology manufacturing up close and experienced the innovative application of synthetic indigo in indigo dyeing immersively.

At Daosheng Biotechnology, students first learned through professional explanations that synthetic biology manufacturing achieves efficient biosynthesis of indigo using a "cell factory" model. This technology not only breaks through the bottlenecks of traditional plant indigo dyeing, such as difficulty in mass production and poor stability, but also avoids the problems of high pollution and unsustainability associated with chemical synthetic dyes, providing a sustainable new solution for industrial innovation.

Subsequently, students entered the bio-indigo dyeing experience area and personally conducted indigo dyeing creations using the synthetic bio-indigo dye independently developed by Daosheng Biotechnology. When traditional intangible cultural heritage tie-dyeing techniques met cutting-edge biotechnology, the fabric, as it was flipped between their fingertips, was dyed with safe, environmentally friendly, and color-stable bio-indigo, allowing students to intuitively feel the new life that technology has injected into the thousand-year-old indigo dyeing craft.

This research and study trip brought the biological knowledge from textbooks to life. It not only allowed young people to appreciate the application value of synthetic biology technology in the fields of environmental protection and cultural and creative industries but also, through the practical experience of "learning, thinking, creating, and transforming," opened up new horizons for them to explore the frontiers of biotechnology.
